3 Things I Learned After Getting My First Brazilian Wax

3 Things I Learned After Getting My First Brazilian Wax

Frankie Follows her first ever Brazilian wax experience and shares the few things she learned along the way.

Once upon a time, I was a scaredy cat afraid to try all things unfamiliar. Fast forward to my late twenties, and there I was, suddenly lying down naked with a stranger pulling out my pubic hair.

This would have been a horror story for the old me, but the current version of myself has treated this as an adventure movie that I can’t wait to share with you.

I will be honest—I was a nervous wreck for weeks leading up to this experience. Like all new and unfamiliar experiences, there was a certain kind of fear looming around my thoughts after accepting the invite to get my first-ever Brazilian wax from the g.spot team. All chikas of friends and family telling me how painful it was for them started haunting me, and truth be told, I was so close to backing out.

What made me push through was—funny as it sounds—the fact that it was another opportunity to crush this off my bucket list (and a trip to Moalboal was fast approaching!)  Boy, was I thankful for those reasons!

Whatever your reason might be for getting that Brazilian wax, take a deep breath and go for it! If you’re still scared, allow me to share a few things I learned which might help convince you to finally go fuzz-free:

Fear will be your greatest enemy

If you’re a first-timer like me looking for more convincing, let me tell you this: It wasn’t as bad as I imagined it to be.

Like all new experiences, the fear was greater than the pain I actually felt, thankfully! Based on stories I heard both from friends and online (yes, I ran to Tiktok and Google to hear from others!), I was actually expecting a teary-eyed two-hour session with multiple screams here and there. But to my surprise, the one-hour session turned out to be a breezy chika minute with the staff assigned to me (thank you Ate Jess of No Strips Waxing Salon!) with a few minutes of discomfort and minimal pain. I really scared myself too much for this.

I often live by this mantra when faced with new experiences I’m reluctant to try—omissions may lead to more regret than commissions. As much as possible, I try to avoid living a life of what ifs from things I don’t even bother to experience, and instead choose to try new things and learn from them.

I’m happy this was applied to my Brazilian wax experience because damn, it feels nice to be fuzz-free!

Preparation is key

As mentioned earlier, this new experience led to research. I spent hours reading about different experiences online and I talked to many friends in hopes of guiding the newbie me. It helps to also hear recommendations from people you trust about places that gave them the most comfortable experience—in my case, No Strips Waxing Salon.

To help ease the fears of first-times, No Strips Waxing Salon actually sends a newbie’s guide filled with tips before your first session. Along with tips I got from the staff, here are some of the things you need to take note of:

  • Get wax ready: Ideal length of hair should be at least 1/4 of a rice grain!
  • Exfoliate beforehand: To open up the pores for easy hair removal, exfoliate!
  • Ditch the razor: Don’t shave two weeks before your waxing appointment!
  • Be mindful of your menstruation cycle: To have a less painful experience, avoid getting waxed a week before and a week after your period.
  • Skip the coffee: Avoid caffeine for your nerves!
  • Breathe and prepare yourself mentally: You will get through this!

Learn to communicate

Like all things in relationships, communication is key.

I was very lucky to actually have a pleasant first-time experience with No Strips Waxing Salon. Before my appointment, my friend already gave a heads-up to the establishment that it was my first time so the person assigned to me was used to newcomers.

From start to end, I communicated my fears and questions which were expertly handled by the staff (big shout out to Ate Jess again!) who guided me every step of the way. She made sure to inform me about every part of the process and she even talked to me to distract me from my nerves. It honestly felt like I was getting to know a new friend (only, she was cleaning my private part! Hehe!).

The friendly environment surely contributed to making my first Brazilian wax experience a good one! So if it’s your first time, don’t be afraid to communicate honestly with the staff assigned to you!
