Throwback Fashion: 10 Old-School Trends That Made a Comeback This Year

Something old is something new! Chennie Montero shows you how to wear trends from the 90s and 00s today.

Do you remember that one outfit you would often wear back in the 90s or 2000s? Mine was the wide-leg pants and crop top. Until now, it’s still my favorite combination!

Trends come and go but one thing’s for sure, they will come back better than ever.

Here are 10 trends or staples that are made a comeback, and how to wear them today.

The Slip Dress

  • Who can forget Kate Hudson’s iconic look from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days? A slip dress is a must-have in your closet. Flowy and comfy, it’s so versatile and easy to wear that you can style it however you want—casual or even semi-formal, depending on the fabric.

The Scarf Top

  • Talk about versatile fashion! Scarves can be both a top and an accessory, and you can style them in so many ways! Here, I tied it up for a casual bandeau moment inspired by Destiny’s Child.

The Baggy Pant

  • These wide-leg pants are so popular now with teenagers, it-girls, and even celebrities—with good reason! It adds a layer of casual-cool to whatever ensemble you have on. You can even play with variations from formal pants, denim, and the all-time 00s trend—cargo. Cue Avril Lavigne.

The Denim Jacket

  • Who can forget that Britney and Justin denim moment at the 2001 American Music Awards? Denim-on-denim is back, but if you’d rather not overdo it, a denim jacket will always be a must-have in your closet that will never really go out of style. For an investment piece, go for the classic denim blue wash.

The Biker Short

  • Diana, Princess of Wales had so many iconic fashion looks (revenge dress, anyone?), but she also knew how to do casual looks with style. She made the biker short trend take off in the 90s, and it’s so easy to follow! Just layer an oversized sweater and some high socks. You can also pair your biker shorts with a crop top and an oversized blazer for something less athletic.

The Bucket Hat

  • Love ’em or hate ’em, bucket hats are on point again! They can be styled with almost anything and give your look a hip and fun vibe. Go for something colorful like this tie-dyed version to pack some punch.

The Combat Boots

  • The Princess Diaries may have had Mia switch out her combat boots for heels, but Queen Julie Andrews definitely didn’t know a thing or two about how stylish these chunky boots actually are. They give a cool kid vibe, especially when paired with mini skirts.

The Crop Top

  • Let’s be real—crop tops have been back for a while, and they show no signs of becoming faux pas anytime soon. There’s just something so unapologetic about baring some skin without being overtly sexy about it. Brave the trend by matching it with something high-waist, like this mini skirt.

The Kitten Heel

  • Not everyone was a fan, but it’s undeniable kitten heels are back on trend. Sophisticated and comfortable, if it looked odd for you, you just might want to try it on. Suitable for outfits for dinner with friends or for days in the office.

The Vest

  • Another versatile piece that looks good with or without a blazer. You can either wear it as it is for a sexy look or go for something more casual by layering it with a basic t-shirt.

The 80s, 90s, and 2000s were definitely memorable eras in fashion, as style icons emerged in these periods as well—Madonna, and Princess Diana to name a few).

These are just 10 of the many staples that are now relived in modern times. These trends came back because most of these pieces are versatile or easy to style with.

Which of the pieces do you still own or which one’s your favorite? Let me know on @chenniemontero!
