6 Home Remedies to Take Care of Your Damaged Hair

If you're on a budget or avoiding going out as much as possible, you can still take care of damaged hair with ingredients from your kitchen!

Our hair is an extension of ourselves. We tend to experiment and play with it with hair colors, unique hairstyles, and many more as a way to creatively express our personalities.

However, our hair is one part of our body that needs to be given extra attention as it can easily be damaged. Even without dyes and chemicals, our hair can end up getting dry by being exposed to the elements. We go to salons for hair treatment, but they can be costly and time-consuming, not to mention some of us are still uncomfortable going out in this pandemic.

From here on in, you felt like this is your moment of truth: “Should I just allow my hair to die in the saddest way possible?”

Oh, for crying out loud, cut it out! You know you shouldn’t and you know you couldn’t allow it!

“But I’m broke!” you cried. Well, what if there was actually a way to repair your hair at home, all by yourself? No salons, no expensive hair treatments!

Well, if you’re up for it, then here is a list of six home remedies to repair your dry and damaged hair using ingredients you already have in your pantry!

Coconut Oil

You know coconut oil works wonders, yeah? It is an all-purpose oil with tons of benefits, one of which is to repair hair that’s been damaged by heat and chemicals. It also strengthens hair, reduces split ends, and supports hair growth? Cool, right?

Coconut oil keeps your hair in place and the scent is not too strong, but if you’re conscious about it, then it’s best to use it on days you’re just staying home. I like applying coconut oil during the weekends and leaving it overnight, showering it off Monday morning before heading out.

Massage two to three tablespoons of coconut oil on your scalp right to your hair ends and let it rest for five minutes (or overnight, if you wish) before rinsing off. You can also use castor oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil if you have scalp issues with coconut oil.

Avocado

While avocado is very popular for celebrity diets, it is also a very popular fruit used for hair masks. It is rich in antioxidants, oil, and proteins to say the least, which is why it makes your hair smooth as it also locks in moisture.

Mash the avocado and add a few drops of olive oil (or coconut oil). Apply to clean, damp hair and let it rest for 15 minutes. You can do this once a week to repair your damaged hair and/or do it once a month for maintenance.

You can also add raw honey and yogurt to your mask, or add egg and mayonnaise if it doesn’t bother you. Personally, I wouldn’t put in egg and mayonnaise since I really don’t like the smell, but whatever floats your boat.

Banana

Bananas may be well known for their potassium, but they’re also very rich in natural oils and vitamins that can prevent dandruff, soften our hair, and lock in moisture. They also help if you have a dry and itchy scalp!

Mix two ripe bananas with a half cup of coconut milk, wait 45 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Alternately, you can mix two ripe bananas with two tablespoons of olive oil, sit for 30 minutes, and wash with shampoo.

Both hair masks leave the same effects on my hair, but I personally use the ripe bananas with coconut milk since it smells better.

Aloe Vera

This is for the win! Aloe vera is the all-time wonder plant and you don’t need to ask why. It’s great for reducing stress, protects you from chronic diseases such as cancer, and soothes your skin. It’s also great for your hair as it helps you with hair growth, reduces dandruff, soothes itchy scalp, and many more!

Mix two teaspoons of aloe vera gel with one teaspoon of honey and three teaspoons of coconut oil. Massage from the scalp to the ends of your hair, and let it rest for 30 minutes before rinsing off.

Honey

Honey locks in hair moisture and it is also affordable so I tried this with happy and positive results!

Mix five tablespoons of honey with a tablespoon of water. Massage into clean, damp hair and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour, and rinse with lukewarm water. It’s as simple as that!

If you want to put in other ingredients for your mask, you can use olive oil or avocado as well, but honey and water alone are enough to rejuvenate your hair.

Baking Soda

I actually have baking soda in my kitchen as well as in my bathroom since this paste is the easiest to do. When I feel too lazy to make my other remedies, I just mix a small amount of baking soda with some water until my mixture forms into a thick paste, which I apply to my hair and rinse with shampoo.

Don’t be afraid to express yourself more by playing with your hair, but don’t forget your hair’s well-being as well. Keep it shiny and healthy with these home remedies that heal it from damage.
