If there’s one makeup category that women can never have enough of, it’s lip products. Incorrigible beauty addict that I am, I’ve probably road tested about 500 lip products—and I mean really tested, as in wearing it all day or for several days, not just swatched or tried on for a bit.
However, I do understand that not all girls actually enjoy wearing lipstick, but might love lip balms or lip tints instead. Here are the five lip products that every girl should have in her beauty arsenal.
The one that fetches compliments every single time
This is the lippie that instantly lifts your entire face, elicits “I love your lipstick! What are you wearing?” compliments from women, and seems to get men’s attention in a not-creepy and not-freaked out way. Put it on and it just makes you look and feel gorgeous even if your brows or eyeliner aren’t cooperating that day. For me, these are Bobbi Brown Luxe Lip Color in Guava and Sunnies Face Fluffmatte lipstick in Girl Crush.
The one for when you have no time
You know this one—it’s the one you reach for when you have no time to think about what to put on. It applies perfectly without fail and can be swiped on without a mirror. Human Nature Tinted Lip Balm in Flame Tree or Rosewood is always in my bag because it provides color like a lipstick, and is impossible to mess up. The cocoa butter, beeswax, and plant oils in it are so nourishing, perfect for people like me who are prone to dry lips. I have also repurchased Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer several times. Some shades are so pigmented, it’s like wearing an ultra buttery lipstick rather than a tinted lip balm.
The one that refuses to give up, even when you feel like quitting
The Hidilyn Diaz of lip products, it just keeps going and wins, against all odds. This is the one that stays on and still looks good through hours of talking or eating. Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick stays on until you take it off with makeup remover.
Although I noticed the wear varies a little depending on the shade, this is the line that is the most consistent for staying power. There are other brands that offer matte liquid lipsticks, but sometimes, only one shade out of seven performs well. I have not tried all 36 shades of SuperStay Matte Ink, but I’ve tried one red, one mauve, and one sort of terracotta shade. As long as it’s applied carefully, not thickly layered on, it will last all day without feathering, cracking, or leaving a ring around your mouth.
The one that he will want to kiss
We certainly don’t wear makeup for guys, but based on market research (lol), some do notice what’s on your lips. We love the look of juicy-looking, high-shine lip gloss, but it might be too goopy for him. The guy-friendly lip combo that won’t make a mess when he kisses it off (or, you know, just a comfortable lip combo that looks pretty) is a weightless lip tint, layered with a soft-shine lip balm that has just a touch of color. Tony Moly Delight Tony Tint, Etude House Dear Darling Water Tint, and so many other Kbeauty and Filipino-made organic tints offer incredibly flattering reds and pinks to suit any skin tone.
As for the lip balm, I have been talking about and repurchasing a crowd favorite for years, the Maybelline Baby Lips Loves Color. Blistex Lip Vibrance is also great for a subtle sheen.
The one that truly, madly, deeply
…cares for your lips while you sleep. I didn’t really think of it as a new type of product until the beauty industry hyped it up in the last few years, and started marketing lip masks and overnight lip treatments. Because I do tend to get uncomfortably dry lips, I apply lip balm every few hours even when I’m just at home.
I never go to bed without applying a heavier lip balm as part of my evening routine. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask does live up to the hype and I’m definitely a fan. I’ve been repurchasing The Body Shop’s lip butters for 20 years (just realizing it’s been that long now; damn!), but really, just pick any creamy lip balm with plant-based softening ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, sunflower oil, jojoba oil, etc. and you’re good to go to sleep.
