With two actors on stage, two acts, two hours, a three-instrument live band, about thirty songs, and a hundred pages learned by heart, this off-broadway musical adaptation of the famed literary classic Daddy Long Legs must surely make it to your watch list.
Daddy Long Legs tells the coming-of-age story of Jerusha Abbott as she faces college, self-discovery, and a developed deep curiosity for the mysterious man sponsoring her education. With a very intimate setup, we were given a closer perspective on how the story develops through Judy’s handwritten letters to “Daddy Long Legs.” There’s humor, wit, and heartwarming feelings of innocent love twirled into this masterpiece, reminiscent of the people we might have been back in the old days.
As the opening act of Cebu Arts’ Month this February, in cooperation with the Office of the Vice Mayor, this production is jampacked with some familiar names from the industry. There’s Penny Ong as the director, Vaudeville Theatre Company, Studio Envision, and Fo Guang Shan as co-producers, and a mixture of both new and experienced actors bringing this musical to life, including Eli Razo, Fatima Soria, Emman Casquejo, and Yna Cajipe. We’re pretty sure this will be a surefire way of rekindling our love for the arts for the month!
If you’re still in need of some convincing though, the motivation behind the creation of this beautiful production can take the spotlight. On top of their overflowing dedication to the theatre industry, co-producers Penny Ong and Junrey Alayacyac expressed their desperate wish for the theatre community to grow in Cebu with hopes that our very own talented Cebuano artists—because there’s no shortage of them!—find their own home and stage in their hometown. Daddy Long Legs will hopefully be the first step toward this dream, and we’re all the way supporting it!
There are truly a lot of reasons to watch this. So whether you’re a certified theatre lover or you’re simply looking for a new hobby, head to the theaters next month. We’re finally blessed with the opportunity to watch live musicals after two years of drought, so make sure you won’t miss this!
Daddy Long Legs will run for three days from February 3-5, 2023. For tickets and other inquiries, you may reach out to their Facebook page.
