It’s Back! Creatives Gear Up for Visayas Art Fair 2022

Visayas Art Fair is back in town this November with a new playground for all artists and creatives from all works of life and their masterpieces.

The Visayas Art Fair, one of the wide-ranging art fairs in the Visayas, returns to reconnect art communities across the Philippines through art and one creative vision this November 24 to 27, 2022 at its new venue, Oakridge Business Park.

Galleries and art collectives are gathering to showcase 1500+ artworks, representing 700+ artists from Visayas Region and NCR. The fair includes curated and featured exhibitions and art installations, live performances such as fashion shows, musical numbers, and cultural and art performances.

Art Talks

The weekend will feature a series of art talks featuring the likes of Emmanuel Garibay, an expressionist artist whose works are inspired heavily by social and political commentary. He will be speaking on his work with the Linangan Art Residency Program on November 25 from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

Immediately following that, there will also be a panel discussion centered on the idea of utilizing space and the role it plays in the evolution of visual arts entitled Artist-Run Galleries: In Community. The panel will be moderated by Claudine Impas of Florentino’s Art Gallery. It will feature prominent names in the industry such as Anjo Bolarda, Ronyel Compra, and Wyndelle Remonde.

Another panel discussion is also slated to take place during the event and will be moderated by UP Fine Arts faculty and curator Prof. Jay Nathan Jore. The panelists for the discussion Painting the Human Form include Emmanuel Garibay, Golda King, and Jun Impas as they talk about the use of the human figure in artistic depictions.

Art Workshops

On November 25, a watercolor painting workshop entitled Timelessness – Visayas in Watercolor will be headed by watercolor specialist Julianne Del Mar. On the next day, a sculpting workshop will be led by Kitty Taniguchi called Future Forms. The Basics of Sculpting.

The last art workshop for the weekend will be held on November 27, Printmaking: The Art of Serigraphy. The watercolor painting workshop will be conducted by Wyndelle Remonde.

Avid painters will also be given an opportunity to showcase their skills via an on-the-spot painting competition that will be held on November 27, the final day of the art fair. Registration for the competition will begin at 10:00 AM of that day and the actual painting competition will start at 11:00 AM. The awarding of winners will take place at 6:00 PM on the same day.

Performance Art

The Fashion Institute of Design and Arts will be presenting the latest collections from some of the institution’s most prominent designers in a fashion show called ART x FASHION on November 26, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Designers who will be participating in the fashion show include Philip Tampus, Mel Maria, Edwin Alba, Valerie Alvez, Ia Coca, Jeanom Ursua, Yoko Sato, Johanna Tan, Jad Solito, Rachel Rama, Sheena Si, Hannah Callano, and Ayka Lim.

The VAF 2022 will also hold a premiere of Duwa-Duwa, a debut film by Boholano filmmaker Nena Jane Achacoso. The film stars Alex Gallardo and Neolita Sarabia and features the writing of Des Suarez along with the musical score of Odoni Pestelos. The film was selected as an official entry for Cinemalaya 18. In the words of the director, Duwa-Duwa is a film that explores the nuances and dynamics of a mother-daughter relationship.

As the Visayas Art Fair continues to strengthen and bridge the relationship between visual arts and creative industries, the fair hosts various affiliated events promoting global Visayan talent in design, architecture, and furniture.

Complementing Visayas Art Fair, Bodega, a creative marketplace, showcases creative goods and services made or offered by Cebu’s diverse creative MSMEs and practitioners.

Bodega will also serve as the venue for the entries of the Blue Mango Awards. The Blue Mango Awards will feature an additional category called Placemaking Awards spearheaded by United Architects of the Philippines Sugbo Chapter and the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers Cebu. The winners of the competition will be exhibited in the Bodega Exhibition Area.

The event is presented by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation Inc., Cebu Design Week, Oakridge Realty Development Corporation, and Globe Platinum.

Visayas Art Fair is also partnering with Globe Platinum on the presentation of the VIP Cocktail Night/Vernissage on November 24th, the opening day of the event. The Platinum Lounge will be set up at the Atrium Garden and will feature merchandise that’s open to the general public. Globe Platinum’s The Platinum Series will also feature Visayas-based artists in its exclusive collection of carefully curated masterpieces from Filipino artists and creatives.
